FAQ’s
We’ve got answers to common questions.
What is the most efficient way for the body to get Vitamin D?
Sun exposure – research suggests that we make 90% of our vitamin D through sun
exposure.
Do you need to protect your lips when tanning?
Yes, you should apply a lip balm with SPF protection before tanning. Your lips do not
produce melanin, which is what protects the body from excessive UV exposure.
What is better to preserve tanned skin, soaps or shower gels?
Shower gels – their lower pH level makes them less likely to strip the skin of it’s built
in “moisture lock”.
Besides UVA and UVB, what is the third thing that is needed to tan?
Oxygen – Lack of oxygen is why pressure points (or white spots) occur on the parts of
the body that are constantly pressed against the tanning bed surface during the
tanning session. To avoid getting these white spots, move around during your tanning
session.
When are the full results from a single tanning session seen?
Believe it or not, up to several days later. The initial exposure triggers a delayed
pigment darkening response which can continue for several days.
Is it really necessary to use protective eyewear when tanning?
Yes – the eyelids are too thin to protect your eyes from excessive UV exposure that
can cause cataracts or eyeburns.
Will showering help relieve the uncomfortable burning sensation you may feel after
using a tingle lotion?
NO – showering with warm or hot water will actually reactivate the tingle sensation.
We recommend waiting a couple hours before showering. If you absolutely must
shower, use cold water only.
Should you avoid showering right after using a bronzer lotion?
Yes – you should wait at least 2 to 4 hours before showering, swimming or any activity
that might cause excess perspiration. This will ensure a smooth, even color and help
prevent streaking.
Should you use outdoor tanning lotions in a tanning bed?
No – outdoor tanning products are formulated differently from indoor tanning lotions.
Indoor tanning lotions are formulated to produce a better tan by replenishing your skin
with the moisture and vitamins it loses during the tanning process.
What helps get rid of white spots on your skin?
Anti-dandruff shampoos, like Head & Shoulders can be used as a body wash on the
affected areas and can quite often get rid of these spots.
Can tanning fade the colors of a tattoo?
Yes, that’s why we recommend applying a lip balm with SPF protectant to your tattoos
prior to tanning.
What about malignant melanoma?
This rare form of skin cancer is still a mystery. It is most common in fair-skinned
people with a family history of melanoma. Though some research suggests a
connection to ultraviolet light, many studies have shown that people who receive
regular sun exposure have less chance of getting melanoma than those who don't.
Also, it is most commonly found on unexposed areas of the body like the lower trunk
and legs.
Why do we always hear that tanning is bad?
The almighty dollar. The fear of the sun is a multi-billion dollar industry led by huge
special interest groups that conduct most of the research on this topic and promote it
as well. Lobbysists for pharmaceutical firms that sell billions of dollars of sunscreens
and anti-sun cosmetics have muddied the issue by overstating the risks of sun
exposure.
Conversely, there is no major industry except the indoor tanning industry that makes
money by promoting the positive effects of sunshine. And the indoor tanning industry
consists of smaller companies that do not match the marketing power of the multi-
billion dollar "sun scare" industry.
Does tanning cause skin cancer?
Ultraviolet light is believed to be linked to skin cancer, but no one understands exactly
how. It's also clear that ultraviolet light is not the only factor. Heredity, diet and
repeated sunburn are the biggest risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancers. There is
ample evidence to suggest that avoiding the sun does not totally eliminate your risk.
Why do most beauty magazines condemn tanning?
MONEY!!! A recent study revealed that the average beauty magazine receives
approximately $1 million in advertising from billion-dollar sunscreen related companies
every issue. These "sun scare" advertisers are making billions of dollars by scaring you
out of the sun. If the beauty magazines didn't support their "sun scare" agenda, would
they receive their advertising dollars?
No wonder beauty magazines work so hard to keep us in the dark!
Is tanning indoors smarter than outdoor tanning?
Definitely! Our customers are exposed to a scientifically controlled dosage of
ultraviolet light carefully formulated to tan you with a minimal risk of sunburn. That
kind of control is virtually impossible outdoors, where variables such as seasonality,
time of day, location, geography, weather conditions, altitude and the Earth's thinning
ozone layer make sunburn much more likely.
Because sunburn is a main risk factor for skin damage, it is very definitely smarter to
tan with the professionally trained staff at this Smart Tan Salon.
Is it possible for heat from a tanning bed to “cook” internal organs?
No. UV light can only travel 2 millimeters deep into the skin – not even close to being
able to travel near internal organs.
